4 months agoApple is rumored to launch the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air in 2025, boasting a sleek 6.25mm thickness, making it the thinnest iPhone ever.
Apple is reportedly working on a thinner iPhone to accompany its flagship iPhone 17 series, which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This new model—tentatively named the iPhone 17 Air—is said to measure just 6.25mm thick, around 2mm thinner than the current iPhone 16 Pro, which is 8.25mm. The details, shared by Mark Gurman in his newsletter, suggest the iPhone 17 Air will break the record set by the iPhone 6 (6.9mm thick), reclaiming Apple's position in ultra-thin smartphone design.
While earlier leaks speculated the device could be as thin as 5mm to 6mm, most reports now align with a 6.25mm thickness. Rumors further hint that Apple may ditch the SIM tray entirely in the iPhone 17 Air, streamlining the phone's design.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature:
A key factor enabling this ultra-slim design is Apple's development of its in-house 5G modem chip, replacing Qualcomm's current hardware. According to Gurman, Apple's custom modem integrates seamlessly with its other components, freeing up valuable space. This allows Apple to maintain battery life, camera quality, and display performance while reducing the device's overall thickness.
Apple's new modem chip will reportedly debut in the upcoming iPhone SE (early 2025) and a low-cost iPad before being integrated into the iPhone 17 Air.
Apple’s advancements in compact hardware design are also fueling speculation about a foldable iPhone. Gurman suggests that Apple is actively exploring foldable concepts and could leverage the additional space saved by its custom chips to bring such devices to market within the next few years.
Looking ahead, Apple may develop all-in-one chips that combine the processor, modem, Wi-Fi, and other components into a single system-on-chip (SoC). This move would not only optimize internal space but also enhance hardware integration, setting the stage for thinner, more powerful iPhones in the future.
With the iPhone 17 series expected in Q4 2025, excitement around the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air continues to grow, signaling a return to Apple's roots of cutting-edge, minimalist design.
