Apple Dropping SE Branding?

According to Weibo tipster Fixed Focus Digital, Apple may discontinue the "SE" branding for its budget lineup. Instead, the new phone is rumored to launch as the iPhone 16e, aligning it with the main iPhone 16 series.

For context, Apple introduced three SE models previously:

  • iPhone SE (1st gen): Released in 2016

  • iPhone SE (2nd gen): Released in 2020

  • iPhone SE (3rd gen): Released in 2022

If this report holds true, the iPhone 16e will join the standard iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max as the fifth variant in the series. The phone is also expected to feature a full-screen design and a larger display comparable to the standard iPhone 16.

iPhone SE 4/iPhone 16e: Expected Specifications

  • Display:
    The device could feature a 6.06-inch display with a standard 60Hz refresh rate, a notable jump from the 4.7-inch screen on the iPhone SE 3.

  • Processor:
    The iPhone SE 4 (or 16e) may be powered by the A18 chipset, expected to debut in Apple’s iPhone 16 series. It could also support Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI suite.

  • Cameras:
    Reports suggest the phone may sport a single 48MP Sony Exmor IMX904 rear sensor and a 12MP front-facing camera—a significant upgrade over the iPhone SE 3’s 12MP and 7MP cameras.

  • Battery:
    The phone is rumored to pack a 3,279mAh battery, far larger than the 2,018mAh cell in its predecessor.

    • IP68 rating for water and dust resistance

    • Face ID for secure authentication

Price and Launch Timeline

The iPhone SE 4 (or iPhone 16e) is expected to be priced between $499 (approx. Rs 42,220) and $549 (approx. Rs 46,400). For comparison, the iPhone SE 3 debuted in India at Rs 43,900 in March 2022.

With its updated features, larger display, and potential rebranding, the iPhone 16e looks set to offer compelling value in Apple’s lineup when it launches, reportedly in March 2025.
